North Coast 500, Scotland

The North Coast 500 is putting Scotland on the map, its 516 miles of free-camping bliss, taking in some of the most incredible sights that Scotland has to offer. We recommend giving at least 5-7 days for the trip. However, it is good to know that the ‘beelach Na Ba’ stretch of the trip is not suitable for large motorhomes, caravans, and inexperienced drivers due to its sharp bends and steep gradients. As an alternative you can take the slip road up the A896 which is a lot safer. If your motorhome is larger than a standard VW T5 conversion (i.e., about 16-18 ft length) it is advised to take an alternative route.

Giant’s Causeway

Giant’s Causeway is in Northern Ireland and is its only UNESCO World Heritage site. Stretching 4 miles on the North interim coast, it formed following a series of volcanic eruptions between 50 and 60 million years ago. The formation is made of over 40,000 interlocking hexagonal basalt columns, some as high as 39 feet above sea level.

Where to park up? Only a few minutes down the road is Ballyness Caravan Park, located in the picturesque village of Bushmills. This is a multi-award-winning luxury campsite with accessible wet room-style showers and baths as well as baby changing and laundry facilities. Prices start form £26 (2 people) per pitch, per night.

Isle of Skye

Also known as the crown jewel of the Highlands, the mythical Isle of Skye is a small island situated off the North-West Coast of Scotland. With the option to see the rolling glens or the breathtaking coastline. The Isle of Skye is connected to Scottish mainland by the 500m long Skye Bridge.

The Isle of Skye has set the backdrop to a lot of blockbuster films; The BFG, King Arthur: Legend of the Sword, Snow White & the Huntsman, and Transformers: The Last Knight.

Gelnbrittle Campsite and Café is the closest place to set up your campervan, set in 42,000-acre grounds of Dunvegan Castle. If you fancy changing things up, this award-winning site offers visitors the option of wild camping matched with on-site facilities.

Hadrian’s Wall

Hadrian’s wall was built on the orders of Emperor, it is believed construction of the 73-mile-long wall began around AD 122 is estimated to have taken around 6 years to complete. Originally the wall was built to mark the border of the Roman Empire, control the movement of people and goods across the border and separate the invading Romans from Barbarians living in Scotland. This is a great place to visit if you are looking for a piece of history along your travels.

Herding Farm Camping and Glamping is only one mile down the road, in 2018 Herding Farm was voted North East campsite of the year. Enjoy the surrounding Northumbrian countryside. This campsite is children friendly and even has a petting farm on-site. Pitches are priced from £20 per night, including electricity.

There are so many great places that you can go around, England, Wales, and Scotland, we hope that you consider some of our recommendations. However, wherever your campervan takes you we really hope you enjoy your travels!
